Joel was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba in 1949. His parents were sent as missionaries to the United States in 1957 to work among the Hispanic population in Miami, Florida. There he was raised until he was 12 years old when he was sent to study at the boarding school at Toccoa Falls School in Georgia as an intern for seven and a half years. There he graduated from High School.
During the second year of his university studies at Toccoa Falls College he dropped out of school and enrolled in the US Navy. The four years he served were during the Vietnam War, (although he was never sent to the war itself.) During that time he was trained and worked as a Psychiatry Technician.
While he was serving in the US Navy, he met his wife Nancy. They were married in 1974 and in 1978 they were sent to Spain as missionaries by the Christian and Missionary Alliance serving there 37 and a half years. His main work was the pioneering work, planting churches, Biblical counseling and the spiritual formation of individuals, couples and families. His passion has always been to bring the wounded man to experience healing and restoration in Christ and to live from that source of living water that only in Christ can we receive.
He obtained a bachelor's degree and master's degrees from various Bible schools such as Toccoa Falls, Columbia International University, Wheaton College, and a Ph.D. in Ministry from the New York Theological Seminary, specializing in counseling and leadership. They currently reside in the suburbs of Atlanta. They have 4 children and eleven grandchildren.
He currently serves as a Bible counselor to men, couples and families with the Renacer ministry in Atlanta. Its main focus is the Hispanic population of Atlanta. He also serves as an advisor to the pastors of the Eastern Hispanic District of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. He is also serving in the formation of a pastoral team in counseling in Cuba.
